Custom Compounding

Compounding is the art and science of preparing customized medications. Most pharmacies do not offer compounding services and many pharmacists are unfamiliar with the art. As your Fort Myers compounding pharmacy, Cypress Pharmacy keeps the art of compounding alive as we continue to compound customized medications for our patients and their pets. Compounding is a great solution for patients who are allergic to preservatives or dyes or are sensitive to standard drug strengths. Patients who have a difficult time swallowing a capsule can have their medication made into a liquid. Our pharmacists can change the strength of a prescribed medication, alter its form to make it easier to ingest or add flavor to make it tastier – great for kids. Cypress Pharmacy can prepare the medication using several different delivery methods, such as a cream, ointment, troche, suppository and capsule.

Areas of Specialization:

Dental: Due to its variety of patients, dental compounding offers patients the benefit of medicines tailored specifically for certain needs. From an eight-year-old getting a cavity filled to an eighty-year-old being fitted for dentures, no two patients are alike and dental compounding can help each patient.

Dermatology: Compounding allows patients to treat their dermatological needs such as skin irritation, sun care and anti-aging with medication that is customized to meet their needs.

Pain Management: Our pharmacist can provide customized care for joint pain, soft tissue inflammation, planter fasciitis, general pain, mouth pain, headaches, and neuropathic pain.

Pediatrics: Children are especially suited for custom compounding medications, as commercially manufactured drug forms are often not the best solution for kids. Common compounded medications included pain relief, respiratory disorder, oral thrush, diabetes, head lice, diaper rash, skin disorders, cold sores/fever blisters and more.

Men’s Health: Due to the variety of patients and conditions, a practitioner working with our pharmacists can compound medications to meet the health needs of men, such as hormone replacement, hemorrhoids, sleep aids and thyroid replacement.

Women’s Health: Typical compounded medications are customized to meet the needs of women, such as hormone replacement therapy, endometriosis, pelvic pain, thyroid replacement, hemorrhoids, pelvic pain, yeast (candida) infection and sleep aids.

Veterinary: Compounding provides valuable benefits to today’s pet owners. Animals may be difficult to treat with medication. Animals are notorious for refusing to swallow a pill and will usually eat right around one disguised in their food. Our compounding pharmacist can prepare medicines into easy-to-give dosage forms that animals devour, whether your pet is a cat, dog, ferret, bird or snake.

Dosage Forms

  • Troches: A popular dosage form used to keep drugs in the mouth when local action is needed. Troches can be enhanced with natural sweeteners and delightful flavors, making them ideal for geriatric and pediatric patients.
  • Transdermals: A widely used method of delivery that allows medication to be absorbed directly through the skin and into the bloodstream quickly. Transdermal medications are also used to avoid potential side effects such as nausea or drowsiness.
  • Suspensions: A Liquid dosage form is the best option for patients who have a hard time swallowing capsules.
  • Patients who also may have problems tolerating the taste of commercially available liquids can have a naturally sweetened, pleasant-tasting oral solution or suspension.
  • Suppositories: Patients who are unable to take medications orally are prime candidates for compounding suppositories. Suppositories deliver medication through the body cavity by melting or dissolving the active ingredients that are then passed quickly into the bloodstream.
  • Capsules: Medication can be compounded into individually customized capsule form. In addition, multiple medication can often be combined into a single dosage or made into delayed-release capsules.
